| Wireless Communications Laboratory (WCL) was set up in Singapore by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) of Japan in April 2002 as NICT Singapore representative office. WCL was one of two facilities under NICT Asia Research Center, established in August 2002, to promote and realize governmental, industrial and academic research collaboration between Asia-Pacific nations. The other facility, in Thailand, investigates Asian language processing technologies. By collaborating with the Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and so on, WCL conducts research and development of wireless communications for the new generation of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and will promote field trials as showcases in collaboration with the research organizations in Singapore and other Asia countries. |

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) was formed by the merger of CRL, Communications Reserach Laboratory and TAO, Telecommunications Advancement Organization of Japan, in April 2004 to promote research and development in cooperation with businesses and universities. |
